College Profile

With a long history, College of Water Resource & Hydropower derives from the Department of Civil Engineering Hydraulics, College of Science and Technology, Sichuan University. The Department of Hydraulic Engineering, Chengdu Institute of Technology was founded in 1952 and the Department of Hydraulic Engineering, Chengdu University of Science and Technology was founded in 1978. The College of Water Resource & Hydropower Engineering was founded in 1998, and it was renamed as College of Water Resource & Hydropower in 2001.

 

There are 188 faulty members, including 53 staffs with senior title, 65 staffs with senor vice title, 31 doctoral supervisors, 1 academician of China Engineering Academy, 2 candidates of national “Talent Development Plan” (including 1 young professional),4 candidates of “Changjiang Scholars Program” (including 2 distinguished professors and 2 chair professors), 4 winners of National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, 1 winner of “Outstanding Youth Fund”, 1 winner of National 100 Excellent Doctoral Dissertations, 10 candidates of Program for New Century (Cross-century) Excellent Talents, Ministry of Education, 2 winners of College Young Teachers of the Fok Ying Tung Education Foundation, 17 science and technology leaders of Sichuan province, 3 winners of Young Science & Technology Award of Sichuan province and 3 winners of Outstanding Youth Fund of Sichuan province.

 

The college is equipped with the departments of Water Resource and Hydropower Engineering, Hydrology and Water Resources Engineering, Agricultural Hydraulic Engineering, Geotechnical & Underground Engineering, Energy and Power Engineering as well as the experimental center of Water Resource and Hydropower Engineering. In addition, there are 2 postdoctoral research stations of hydraulic engineering and civil engineering, 2 class-one doctoral disciplines of hydraulic engineering and civil engineering, 14 doctor stations and 17 master stations. College discipline construction has experienced the “Modern Water Resource and Hydropower Science and Engineering”, the key construction discipline of 211 Project and the 985 Project of “Scientific and Technological Innovation Platform of Resource Environment and Disaster Prevention in Southwest”. In 2017, Sichuan University entered the rank of A construction of the first-class universities in the world. The leading disciplinary group of “Deep Rock Mechanics and Underground Hydraulic Engineering” was listed in the key construction disciplines of Sichuan University.

 

There are 5 undergraduate majors of Water Resource and Hydropower Engineering, Hydrology and Water Resources Engineering, Energy and Power Engineering, Agricultural Hydraulic Engineering and Underground Space Engineering. Water Resource and Hydropower Engineering as well as Hydrology and Water Resources Engineering are national special majors. Furthermore, the Water Resource and Hydropower Engineering is the construction specialty of the national first “Excellent Engineers Project Training Plan”. At Present, the college has 2027 students, including 619 doctors and postgraduates and 1408 undergraduates. Since 2006, the college has been cooperating with University of Nottingham of UK, Technical University Clausthal of Germany on international undergraduate joint education program.

 

There are national key laboratories that are developed and protected by hydraulics and mountainous rivers, the key laboratories of Geotechnical Engineering in Sichuan, the key laboratories of Hydrology and Water Resource in Sichuan, deep science laboratories of Sichuan University and other scientific research platforms and bases. In recent years, the college has undertaken more than 200 projects of National Key Research and Development Plan, National Natural Science Funds and major Engineering Scientific Key Projects. Moreover, the college has participated in the scientific research of all high dam projects that are above 200m, which obtained numerous of important symbolic achievements and made a significant contribution to the fundamental research and technical progress in the field of Water Resource and Hydropower Engineering. In terms of awards, it won 1 second prize of National Natural Sciences, 1 second prize of National Award for Technological Invention, 6 second prizes of National Prize for Progress in Science and Technology, more than 60 awards for scientific and technological advancement and teaching awards at ministerial and provincial level. The annual academic research funds is more than RMB 100 million.

 

The college develops exchanges and cooperation at home and abroad actively. In recent years, it has hosted and undertaken the annual conference of Chinese Hydraulic Engineering Society and other domestic academic conferences as well as international academic conferences like the 35th IAHR Congress. In addition, it has established substantive research partnerships with 15 universities and research institutes in 12 countries, such as the United States, UK, France and Germany.
